Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug Styled Two Ways with Mohawk Home

Today I’m partnering with Mohawk Home to show you their beautiful indoor/outdoor Lanai Border area rug, styled two ways!

How to Decorate an Outdoor SpaceTan Indoor Outdoor Area RugMohawk Home Lanai Border Area Rug

Our deck is our main outdoor space.  It faces the lake, with sliding patio doors that open from our open concept kitchen, dining and living spaces – so we definitely hang out there a lot in the warmer months.  But in the years since we purchased this lake house, we’ve carved out other little sitting areas as well.  On the bunkie deck we created a little spot for two, with a tulip table and pair of vintage Eames chairs.  Then on the roadside of our house we started using the little concrete pad, located beside the concrete that leads to our carport.  For so long I didn’t do anything with this space – but then we got chickens!  And before we built the coop, we built a big wooden gate.  Now that little concrete pad has privacy from the road, and a sweet clucking reason to sit there, so I bought two super comfy chairs and we’ve been making a lot more use of that space.  Unlike the deck, it gets baked in the sun so it’s a nice, hot spot to sit.  Plus it’s right beside the raspberry bushes, so lately we’ve been picking handfuls and just sitting there, munching away and tossing some to the chickens, haha.

I’ll admit though, that even with a pair of chairs it still just looked like a concrete pad – not a cozy outdoor living space:

Decorating a Concrete Patio

Even after I added planters and a little vintage table, it felt… naked.  I had started looking for an outdoor rug last year, but couldn’t find one to complement the moody new house exterior.  (Why are so many outdoor rugs garish and cheap looking?)  When Mohawk Home reached out this summer, I was thrilled because I quickly realized that they make some seriously beautiful indoor/outdoor area rugs!  I found exactly what I had envisioned but couldn’t find before: an elegant and modern outdoor area rug in a neutral colorway, that complements the dark house exterior but also adds some great texture and warmth.

My new area rug grounds the space and carves out an official little sitting area, making it feel more like an outdoor space to hang out and less like a concrete pad with two chairs…  I’m feeling so inspired, I’m even working on a tulip base coffee table for my new favorite outdoor space!

If you’re wondering about the feel, the Lanai Border area rug is thick and plush and feels so good underfoot.  The machine-woven flat weave is very substantial and it feels like great quality.  I just know we will be able to enjoy this for many summers to come!  This indoor/outdoor area rug came in different colors for the banding, but I love how the thick black band ties into the black soffit, fasica, and windows.  The natural color and diamond pattern are so chic with our chairs – it has a very upscale, coastal vibe!

This concrete patio is where my new indoor/outdoor area rug will live permanently, but I couldn’t resist trying it out on the freshly stained deck too, so you can see what it looks like against a darker surface.  Just like on the concrete patio, this area rug really carves out a defined lounging area on the deck, adding some great texture to this outdoor space.  And once again, the black trim matches the black windows, soffit and fascia.

You’ve created such a cozy space! Love the rug – it works perfectly in both spaces. What I really really love, however, is your chairs – especially the wicker ones and the ones on the bunkie deck. Can you share your source(s)?

Thank you! The wicker chairs are actually a more durable plastic-type material so they still look brand new after baking in the sun for years. They’re from HomeSense, but the brand is Samantha Pynn – I’m sorry I can’t find a link online. (These are similar). The black ones on our deck are from AllModern but they don’t make them anymore. And the bunkie deck has a pair of vintage Eames chairs I bought on kijij for $15. Because they’re fiberglass, they hold up through all seasons, which is handy! I’m sorry I’m not more helpful – I shop a lot of sales and secondhand, so that makes it hard to find the exact same items.

Ahhh…Samantha Pynn – such a great designer. Those Eames chairs – what a find! I’m inspired to shop for something similar. Thanks!

Oh no! That must be so disappointing! Hopefully you can find a nice rug to cover it for now 🙂
