Rustic log house gets a dreamy transformation in Jackson Hole

This rustic log house has undergone a complete overhaul by Carney Logan Burke Architects, located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Originally the homeowners were seeking to find a brand new contemporary home in the Jackson Hole area. Yet after an extensive search, they spotted this gem near a ski resort with the intention of transforming and updating the cabin. The challenge presented to the new homeowners was to bring a contemporary style to this rustic abode.

The architects began this project by stripping out an overwhelming moss rock fireplace and gutting an inefficient and dark bedroom master suite. Several of the log walls were concealed by drywall to create lighting coves and space for the homeowner’s extensive and personal art collection. An alabaster tinted lacquer was applied to both log and plaster walls – this single move both brightened and united the new and existing construction.

Original wide plank circle-sawn Douglas Fir floors were re-finished to a smooth, ebony appearance. Existing quartzite flagstone flooring was replaced with a flamed and brushed limestone. The casework throughout utilizes quarter-sawn white oak, paired with engineered quartz countertops.

The exterior logs were glass-blasted to remove years of UV-degraded and yellowed varnish. A penetrating muted blue-gray finish, picking up tones of the limestone paving that carries from the interior to the exterior, was then applied. The appearance of the home now deftly straddles the line between a rustic retreat and the gallery feel of the interior renovation.

What We Love: This rustic log house features a warm and cozy atmosphere thanks to a complete renovation of the living spaces. The interiors are now bright and airy, creating a feeling of spaciousness. Painting the ceiling and walls white, including the logs, adds to the overall contemporary vibe that the homeowners were looking to achieve. Overall the design team did a fantastic job of creating an inviting environment… Readers, what do you think, what details do you like about this home? Please tell us in the Comments!

Did anyone find out what the log walls were painted with? They are beautiful! I have a log home and would love to try painting them.

Fantastic exterior stain. I’m building a small cabin in Colorado and would love to know what product you used? I’m so sick of the tired reds and yellows that I’m coming across. Any tips ?!

Beautiful bright and clean. I like it, couldn’t do that to ours but l think a washed white log would be nice too. Gorgeous!
