Client Reveal: An Urban Cabin Living Room

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating – being invited into a clients home is such a privilege. Then to be trusted to pull together a space that not only meets their needs, but beautifully showcases who they are, is an honor. This week I’m sharing what has been a dream project, an Urban Cabin Living Room of sorts, for the dreamiest of clients.

Inspiration for the space came from it’s gorgeous surroundings, located just off the Bow River in south Calgary. It’s hard not to be drawn into the peaceful and idyllic river bank.  Like where they live, my client too has a lovely calming presence despite being a busy grandma! Knowing that coming together with family was important, I wanted to create a space that was comfortable and encouraged gathering. Since there is bound to be little ones running around, the space also had to be durable.  So we choose sturdy fabrics and decided to keep the plush rust sofa, which became the springboard for the design.

The custom chairs with a delicate stripe coordinate with the sofa, while brighten up the space. Like the sofa, they are deep and comfortable, the kind of chair you could easily loose an afternoon to a good book in. The rolled arms and stud details tie into the other traditional elements in the room.

Playing off the beautiful wood tones and rustic elements in the space, we went with a reclaimed wood coffee table. The round shape helped to soften the room. Pulling the chairs in closer created a more intimate space that encourages conversation.

Finding just the right side tables was a challenge, which my client will attest to! But the time was well spent, because I simply love the ones we landed on, the black helps to extend the line of the sofa without overpowering it. They also work to tie in the other black accents, like the light fixture and cabinet. The glass top keeps them feeling light despite their generous size.

Perhaps one of my favorite features in the room are the table lamps. The colour works beautifully with the sofa without being kitschy and their size is just perfect. There is nothing worse than sitting on a sofa and being able to see the light bulb in a lamp!

And lastly, the textiles. To keep the room feeling light and bright, I went with cream as the accent colour. I also brought in textures like knitted throws and knotted pillows to indulge the cozy feel we were going for.

Although he was a last minute find, I am obsessed with the picture of the stag. Incredibly striking and majestic, he plays so well with the homes surroundings and really helps to ground the space. Since he sits directly across from the gorgeous stone fireplace, the pictures dark background combined with the weight of the cabinet really helps to balance the room.

I could gush about this room forever, it was such a dream to work on and I adore how it turned out. It is the most comfortable space, like a cabin in the woods, perfect to spend a quiet afternoon with a book or to gather with family and friends.

The story of this home doesn’t end here! Nope. We worked on the master bedroom as well, click here to see that space 🙂

      Hi Brenda,
The home was already painted when my clients moved in. I unfortunately don’t have the paint colour! I’m so sorry. Thank you so much for stopping by!
